The Irish coffee, while traditionally served with alcohol such as whiskey, can also come without the alcohol if you want to celebrate your Irish heritage but minus the booze. Whether you want the alcohol or not, we’ve got you covered for your St. Patrick’s Day coffee needs. These four Irish coffee recipes are sure to be delightful even after the main holiday is over!
(Note: do remember to drink responsibly if you decide to drink one of the alcoholic Irish coffees.)
2 Non-Alcoholic Recipes
- 2/3 cup fresh brewed hot coffee
- ¼ tsp brandy or rum extract
- 2 tsp light brown sugar
- ½ cup heavy whipping cream
- 2 tsp cocoa power (optional garnish)
Pick your mug. If you’re going completely traditional, go for the glass mug. Pour the coffee, extract, and brown sugar into the mug and stir until the sugar completely dissolves.
In a medium bowl, beat the whipped cream until thick and airy but still pourable. Transfer to a container or a jug with a spout (for easy pouring).
Before pouring the whipped cream, be sure the surface of the coffee is perfectly still. Hold a spoon in the center of the mug, then pour the cream over the back of the spoon. There should be a sharp line between the coffee and perfectly floating cream. If needed, use the spoon to smooth out the cream.
Dust the top of the cream with the cocoa powder, and if you’re feeling creative, use a stencil.
With a Twist:
- 2 cups strong coffee
- 2 tsp orange juice
- 2 tsp lemon juice
- Whipped cream
Stir ingredients well in a container. In either whisky glasses, or tall, slender glasses, pour the coffee mixture leaving room for the topping. Add the whipped cream on top and enjoy.
2 Alcoholic Recipes
- 1 cup freshly brewed hot coffee
- 1 tbsp brown sugar
- 1 shot of your favorite Irish whiskey (recommended 1 ½ ounces or 3 tbsp)
- Heavy cream, slightly whipped
To preheat your desired mug (a glass mug or footed glass mug for traditional), fill it with hot water, let it sit for a moment, and then empty.
Pour your hot coffee into the warmed glass until ¾ full. Add the brown sugar, stirring until dissolved completely.
Blend in your Irish whiskey. Hold a spoon over the middle of the mug with the back facing up. Pour the whipped cream over the spoon gently.
- 1 cup hot strong brewed coffee
- 1 ounce your favorite Irish cream liqueur
- Heavy whipped cream, slightly whipped
- Chocolate shavings (optional garnish)
Preheat your desired mugs with hot water then pour out. Pour your coffee into the mug then stir in your Irish cream liqueur. You can pour the whipped cream the traditional way or just pour in easy. Top with the chocolate shavings.
